Central Sierra Bird Sightings
The demise of the listserv
Once upon a time, we had an active listserv to which our members could add sightings and other information, but as eBird has become more popular, useful, and very easy to use, the idea of a listserv has lost its value. That is to say that data on a listserv stays where it is and is useful only for occasional viewers, whereas data entered into eBird becomes part of a national database that provides valuable information on bird populations, movements and timing, all of which are critical to conservation efforts. eBird allows you to check up on any species or location that you wish to explore and so is much more useful than the listserv ever was. So, we highly recommend that you join eBird (free) and submit your observations as well as researching what others have seen and posted.
Joining and using eBird
First log on to eBird, click on the top tab “Explore Data” then on the next page click on “Explore a Region.” Next, type in either “Tuolumne” or “Calaveras”. When the list appears, clicking on “Recent Visits” will show what’s been seen. If you have not registered in eBird, to register, click on “Create an Account”, and fill in the blanks, choosing your user name, password and email address. After registering, there is a Quick Start Guide that will help you starting to enjoy the benefits of eBird, and starting with your own entries.
