This Costa's Hummingbird was at Tom & Kathy Harrington's home for the 2005 Christmas Bird Count. Though they had one visiting their feeder this past summer, it is unusual to see one this time of year.

Please come and join us on Saturday, December 18 for the 26th Sonora Christmas Bird Count. Our count is one of over 2,000 worldwide that count all the birds (well, those that can actually be seen or heard) within a 15 mile diameter circle. Last year, 60,753 volunteers tallied over 56 million birds representing 2,300 species.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT ALL LEVELS OF EXPERTISE. Come out and enjoy the day in the great outdoors and in great company.
If you do not want to or cannot go out for a walk, VOLUNTEER AS A FEEDER WATCHER. You can participate from the comfort and safety of your home and help us out a great deal. Please let me know it you want to participate at this level. I will send you the “ground rules”.

Depending on the area you are in, you spend a good deal of the day walking or driving and counting EVERY bird you see or hear. I ask that you spend as much time as you can in the field. If you would like to participate in this worldwide endeavor, call Steven Umland at 352-6985 or Contact Steve by Email to sign up.

After the counting is done you are invited to attend the After-Count & Winter Potluck at the Senior Center, next to the Library on Greenley Road, Sonora, and swap stories of the day with the rest of the people who were out and about.
